Symposium Potsdam 2014

Terminus „Railwaystation“.

Migrants have increasingly visited the railwaymissions throughout the past years. Between 2008 and 2013 the numbers have almost doubled.

Asking the different railwaystations the following has shown: People asking for help are coming from different countries, many from Eastern Europe, many came as refugees. They came, because their existence is threatened and they don´t see any further perspective in their home country. In rich Germany they hope for more safety and security, work and maybe a little prosperity.

When those people come to the railwaymissions, these hopes have already been shattered. They live under the poverty line (subsistence level) many have been exploited on the illegal job market, are without apartments and show other signs of social exclusion.

The mostly voluntary workers of the railwaymissions face a dilemma: they see the great need on one hand and the complete exhaustion of public social systems to which they should transfer these people on the other hand. The populist discussion about impending immigration floods and the abuse of our social system that goes with it certainly doesn´t help either.

Is the only thing left to do for the railwaymissions a cup of coffee, a word of pity and a phonecall to an office that will pay for a ticket back to the home country?

You are cordially invited to our Conference of Migrations Policy of the Railwaymissions where we will take a look at the most pressing issues and problems and search for solutions together.

We are looking forward to seeing you!
